What to Wear to Hot Yoga?

July 1, 2024- by Tyler Collins

Hot yoga is a popular workout, but figuring out what to wear can be a challenge. The last thing you want is to show up to class in uncomfortable or inappropriate clothing, which can affect your performance and enjoyment of the workout.

Choosing the right outfit can be a sweaty, uncomfortable struggle. You want to stay cool and comfortable during your yoga practice, but also look good. Plus, traditional workout clothes may not be suitable for the heat and humidity of this sweaty session.

In this blog post, we will give you some ideas on what to wear to your session. By reading these tips, you can easily find the perfect outfit for your next class.

Moisture-wicking fabric

When choosing clothing, it is important to pay attention to the materials. The fabrics you wear can make a huge difference in how comfortable and functional your outfit will be. This type of workout involves a lot of sweating, so it’s essential to wear clothing that can dry quickly and evaporate moisture. Fabrics like nylon, polyester, and spandex are great options as they are designed specifically for athletic activities.

For tops, choose fabrics that are lightweight and breathable. You don’t want to wear anything too heavy or restrictive that can hinder your movement and make you feel even hotter. Females often wear only a sports bra but can layer with a tank top or t-shirt if desired.

If there’s one piece of clothing you need to invest in, it’s a good pair of yoga pants. There are many different types for both males and females that can provide full coverage and allow for maximum movement.

While shorts may seem like a good idea because of the heat, they are not always the best choice. When you wear shorts, they can ride up and become uncomfortable with all the bending and stretching. It can also be challenging to hold your poses when your legs become sweaty and slippery.

Make sure you choose pants or leggings specifically designed for working out and avoid the transparent, see-through pieces meant to be worn under dresses. Females can opt for leggings with exceptional stretch that remain secure throughout their practice. A high waistband is also beneficial, as it keeps your tummy tucked in during challenging yoga poses.

Semi-fitted tops

Do I wear a top that’s loose or fitted? This is a common dilemma when it comes to hot yoga clothing. The best option is a semi-fitted top that allows for airflow while still staying in place during your practice. If your clothing is too loose, you’ll find yourself constantly adjusting it, and may hinder your concentration during the class. If it’s too tight, it can restrict your breathing and movement.

Avoid a baggy t-shirt that can become heavy and clingy as you sweat. Go for a top that’s fitted at the waist. This way, you won’t have to worry about it riding up when you’re in downward dog or other poses.

Whether it’s sports bras, leggings, or crop tops, your attire must provide ample support. With all the movement and sweat, you want to make sure everything stays in place while you do your poses.

For females, a sports bra with medium to high impact support is recommended. This will ensure your focus remains on your practice and not on adjusting your clothing.

Bring hot yoga essentials

If it’s your first time going to this type of class, make sure to bring essential items to make your experience more comfortable. Apart from the appropriate clothing, it’s recommended to bring the following items:

  • Water bottle – Staying hydrated and sipping water is crucial during classes.
  • Towel – Classes can get very sweaty, so having a towel to wipe yourself down is essential.
  • Yoga mat – Bringing your own mat is ideal for hygiene purposes. You can also bring a yoga towel to place over your mat for extra grip and to absorb sweat.
  • Hair tie – Keeping your hair away from your face is important during classes.
  • Extra clothes – It’s important to change out of your sweaty clothes and into dry clothing after class.
